Gov. Bentley on verge of declaring proration

Gov. Bentley on verge of declaring proration

Governor Bentley admits he may be on the verge of declaring proration early on in his administration.

"I think declaring proration in the education budget is a possibility and in the general fund, it is more of a probability," he said.

Bentley talked about the proration possibilities just before he swore in his cabinet Tuesday morning. Bentley says his administration is already looking at how much proration will be needed in the state's two budgets.

Bentley says he feels it would be better to declare proration early so state agencies could better deal with the impact over the coming months.

Bentley says it's the state's budget that pays for roads and prisons that is hurting the most.

Madison council OKs land swap with schools

The Madison City Council has approved an agreement for a land swap with the Madison School Board.

City Attorney Kelly Butler says the city and school board will swap land in an even exchange if the school board approves it at a joint meeting on Tuesday.

School board member Connie Spears says the school system needs land to build a new bus garage, and the city owns 10 acres near the central office site.

Mayor Paul Finley says the land the city expects to acquire from the school board will improve access to the downtown area from the stadium and to alleviate congestion after events there.
