2 Chicago gang members arrested in Madison Co. check fraud scheme | News
MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- Two men from a Chicago gang were arrested in what authorities believe is a check fraud scheme against Redstone Federal Credit Union.
Madison County Sheriff's investigators arrested David Brown and Jeremy Hudson at the La Quinta Inn in Huntsville on November 15, 2012.
Brown and Hudson are both members of Gangsters Disciples, a street gang in Chicago.
Madison County authorities have been investigating the scheme for more than a year. They believe they would get money by creating counterfeit checks and other fraudulent ways, then they would deposit the money into a RFCU account and withdraw it.
RFCU said the checks were pretty elaborate and difficult to tell they were counterfeit.
They said their big break came when $71,000 in fraudulent checks were deposited into RFCU in November 2012.
RFCU said the losses could be at least $140,000 but possibly more than $200,000. They are still investigating.
Authorities said there is a similar scheme going on in Chicago. Twelve people were indicted for the same thing there recently, but they have not determined if the cases are connected.
There is a possibility of more arrests in Alabama and in Chicago.
Brown and Hudson are in the Madison County Jail.
