Madison clean up day

Begin your community involvement by participating in "Madison Clean Up Day". The entire community is invited to come together to clean up the streets and keep our quality of life and the presentation of our city impeccable. Clean Up Madison Day is in partnership with the Horizon Elementary Eco-kids and will be held on May 21st from 8:00 AM - 12:00 PM.

The Citywide cleanup day is being supported by the Madison Chamber of Commerce, Madison City Schools, local apartment complexes, Madison HOA Network, civic organizations, churches, businesses and local volunteers. Special thanks and appreciation also goes out to our sponsors Allied Waste, Home Depot, Rocket City Sitters, and Allied Photography.

Huntsville chosen one of two finalist for National Solar Observatory Headquarters

The University of Alabama in Huntsville has been selected as one of two finalists in the nationwide competition to host the Directorate Site of the National Solar Observatory Program.  The NSO is the nation's premier ground-based scientific research program to study solar physics and space weather, and is operated under the auspices of the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy (AURA) on behalf of the National Science Foundation (NSF).

UAHuntsville and NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center were the primary developers in the community's proposal to relocate the NSO headquarters to Huntsville. Other members of Team Huntsville include the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, Sci-Quest, Alabama A&M, Oakwood University, as well as other southeast regional universities, private sector companies and government laboratories.

Friday is Earth Day! Bridge Street Town Centre and Earth Fare Supermarket are teaming up to present a day of eco-friendly fun and promote a green community. 

All activities are free and events for kids and adults will be located throughout the Centre, including cooking demonstrations with Humble Heart Farms and SmokeHouse Restaurant from Noon to 4:00pm, and live music from local artists, Brother Ric and Faro Davis until 4pm.

On Earth Day, April 22nd from 9am-12pm bring your glass items to the new Madison Glass Recycling Dropoff.  You can earn points for your child's school! When you drop off your glass, just let them know which school you want your points to go towards. They will tally the points and a student from the winning school will win a Sony MP3 from Allied. Other lucky students will win iTunes gift cards from Alabama Glass Recyclers, a teacher will win a 1 hour massage from Eagle Rehab, and the winning school's principal will also receive a one hour massage.

The City of Madison happy to announce a Glass Recycling Dropoff now available to its residents located next to Discovery Middle football field.  Please enter using the north entrance and please avoid use during carline hours of Monday-Friday-7:15a,-8:05 am and 3:00-3:45 pm.

Earth week at UAHuntsville

The University of Alabama in Huntsville will celebrate the 41st anniversary of Earth Day with a week full of green contests and activities. Earth Week at UAHuntsville will be observed Monday, April 18 through Friday, April 22.

Earth Day was founded and first celebrated on April 22, 1970, by U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson (D-Wisconsin). Observed and celebrated in many countries every year, Earth Day has become an annual national event to learn about ecology and what we can do to reduce environmental harm.

Festivities will begin with an official kick-off at noon, on Monday, April 18 at Charger Village. The opening event will feature speakers from the Huntsville City Operation Green Team and the UAHuntsville energy office. Event organizers will provide a brief overview of the week's scheduled activities. Students will also be encouraged to sign-up for the new green student organization sponsored by the Student Government Association.
