Space & Rocket Center offers free admission with can donation

Space & Rocket Center offers free admission with can donation

The annual WAFF 48 Can-A-Thon kicks off on December 6th, but a special event at the US Space and Rocket Center will give you a chance to donate early.

The USSRC is hosting the Can Do Good Social Design Competition Saturday, and anyone who brings three canned items gets into the museum for free.

The Can Do Good Social Design Competition pits teams from several local high schools against each other for a good cause. The teams are given canned goods, and asked to build whatever kind of structure they can. Engineers and local celebrities (including WAFF 48's Marie Waxel) then judge the structures based on strength and creativity. The winners will get trophies and see their structure left on display for a 3-5 days. After that, the structures are broken down and donated to the WAFF Can-A-thon

MARF is a non-profit organization that is funded mostly by community donations. To learn more about the group, and the animals they're caring for, visit the MARF website.

Places 'Yule' Love: Art & Soul Gallery

Radio stations have started their holiday music, stores have put out displays, and the lights are on at the Botanical Gardens and Bridgestreet -- Tis the season.  For me, sometimes the season = stress!  Now I know that gifts are only a small part of the celebrations, but finding that perfect, thoughtful gift is always on my mind.

So this year I am starting early by hitting up my favorite spots and finding new ones.  I am sharing them in a series of articles that focus on the small businesses, artists, and supporting our locals.

There is a new business just over the mountain in Huntsville that features 20 artists from all across North Alabama and Southern Tennessee.  The name is "Art & Soul" and from the moment I walked in, I fell in love!

What I loved about the business is it has all types of art - Paintings, jewelry, metal sculptures, ornaments and more!  It recently opened i

Who does my donation help?

When Madison County residents make a can donation to the WAFF 48 Heart of the Valley Can-a-thon your donation goes directly to Christmas Charities Year Round, a 501 (ac)(3) agency that serves Madison County residents in need.

Christmas Charities' mission is to provide basic necessities to people who are facing difficult times.  Specifically, it provides children in low-income families with help to improve their lives, as well as elderly Madison County residents struggling to make ends meet. Eligible families can receive clothing, furniture and appliances any time during the year. And of course at Christmas, CCYR is Santa's little helper providing toys and holiday treats.

Serving Families in Need at Manna House

Serving Families in Need at Manna House

*Article from RocketCityMom.com.

For my first installment of volunteering with kids I visited Manna House. We volunteered on a Thursday night, the last night that Manna House serves before the weekend and the long line outside showed the need people are having in our local community.

We asked around and found Fran Fluhler, the seemingly inexhaustible director of Manna House. “Our mission is to love on those who are in need, helping in any way we can. People love to see the smiling faces of children helping out in the food line – it cheers their hearts.”

Students collect pet food for no kill shelter

In an effort to give back to their community, students at Sparkman Middle School made it their mission to collect dog and cat food to be donated to the Ark of Madison County.

Ark is a non-profit, “no kill” animal shelter that operates solely on donations and fundraisers and receives no city, county, state or federal funding.

The service project for felines and canines lasted nine days, and was called 9 for 9’s.

More than 400 pounds of food for their furry friends were donated.
