Madison schools getting new security doors

Madison schools getting new security doors

Madison, AL (WAFF) - Madison City Schools will have some new security features thanks to a $10,000 contribution from Madison County Commissioner Steve Haraway.

The money will be put towards a double door entrance system where visitors will be able to enter a foyer freely, but be buzzed into the school itself by a staff member. The bidding process is already underway and work could begin as soon as this spring.

"I can't thank Commissioner Haraway enough for all that he has done for Madison City Schools," Madison City Schools Superintendent Dr. Dee Fowler said. "He has been very supportive as a parent, booster, Madison City Council member and now as a county commissioner.

Madison Hospital invites you to the 2nd Medi Gras

Madison Hospital invites you to the 2nd Medi Gras

If you can't make it down to New Orleans during Mardi Gras, don't worry -- you can still Laissez les bons temps rouler (let the good times roll) in February.

The Huntsville Hospital Foundation along with the Madison Hospital Women's Council is bringing back Medi Gras this year.  This will be the second year for the New Orleans themed bash that will raise money for the new Madison  Hospital Breast Center.

I was able to talk with Julia Schmidt, one of the organizers this year, and she gave me the inside scoop on what you can expect when you walk into The Jackson Center at HudsonAlpha on February 9th.

Madison Arts Council annouces 'Love Art' Membership Drive

Madison Arts Council annouces 'Love Art' Membership Drive

Along with being incredibly awesome at finding local places to shop and spend my money and sharing that on-line, I also happen to be passionate about the arts.   Now all across the Tennessee Valley there are local groups that support the arts, but what those groups need are YOUR support.

You may know about The Arts Council and how they put on Panoply, concerts in the park, the SPACES trail and Art on the Square.  Those things don’t just happen.  They take time, money, and volunteers to make these events possible for the public.

In my neck of the woods, they have the Madison Arts Council.  They are hosting a Love Art Membership Drive.  What/Who is the Madison Arts Council?

Harvest celebrates new storm shelter

Harvest celebrates new storm shelter

Harvest, AL (WAFF) - A new community storm shelter is opening soon in Harvest.

Churches, local organizations, and the Harvest Youth Club all partnered together to raise the funds for the shelter. It'll be located off Lockhart Road in the Harvest Meadows community, right by the Harvest Youth Club building. The town has been hammered by tornadoes in the last two years, and HYC provides after school care to more than 60 children every day. Now, those kids will have a safe place to go when severe weather strikes. The shelter will also be open to the community during storms.

The groups, led by HYC and Good Shepherd UMC are about $15,000 away from their fundraising goal of $68,000. They're holding a groundbreaking ceremony later this week, and hope to have the shelter done by March 1st.

Toney, BoBo deal with field fire

Toney, BoBo deal with field fire

Toney, AL (WAFF) - Toney Fire & Rescue was busy this morning, dealing with a large field fire off Wall Triana and Jomar Road.

Toney sent two trucks, and had backup from BoBo Fire & Rescue during the event.

Fire investigators tell us it looks like the fire began when a bush hog hit and rock, sending sparks flying. It took the fire crews about 15 minutes to get the fire under control, despite strong winds pushing the flames forward.

No injuries or property damage was reported.
