Harvest, AL (WAFF) - A new community storm shelter is opening soon in Harvest.

Churches, local organizations, and the Harvest Youth Club all partnered together to raise the funds for the shelter. It'll be located off Lockhart Road in the Harvest Meadows community, right by the Harvest Youth Club building. The town has been hammered by tornadoes in the last two years, and HYC provides after school care to more than 60 children every day. Now, those kids will have a safe place to go when severe weather strikes. The shelter will also be open to the community during storms.

The groups, led by HYC and Good Shepherd UMC are about $15,000 away from their fundraising goal of $68,000. They're holding a groundbreaking ceremony later this week, and hope to have the shelter done by March 1st.
