Start your year out on the right (pampered) foot!
We all start our New Year with the best of intentions: Lose weight, spend less/save more, and de-stress.

I am right there with you! I am learning that it's important to take care of yourself. As much as I would love to say I treat my body like a temple, it's more like I am treating as a pop up tent. Not good - So my 2013 is on a way to a better me.

I always feel better when I can take some time to get my nails done. It's not an expensive treat and it is always a fun girls trip. So I decided to take my buddy to try out a new nail salon near my house called A-L Nails & Spa.

A-L Nails & Spa is located on County Line Road right next to Stem and Stein (10871 County Line Road, Madison AL). Previously there was a salon there called Fantasy Nails, but this is a new business, new owner, new look!

Alex Phan is the owner of the recently opened business. This is his first time owning his own salon even though he has managed several salons and spas from Ohio to Chicago and New York.

Alex bought the space in Madison and started taking everything down to the studs. He completely remodeled the inside in two months for a sleek interior that has an organic feel. He brought in brand new equipment and pedicure chairs.

He even has two kid chairs. They are adorable! They have a DVD player that you can bring in a movie and let your princess get pampered like mommy!

Alex, 31, has a passion for his business and for making people feel relaxed and beautified. He has been working with nails since he was 18 years old. He is a graduate of Aveda Institute in New York. He has event worked as a podiatrist assistant, which requires extensive training.

Alex calls himself a survivor, but I call him an inspiration. Alex came to America from Vietnam in 1989 with his father. His Vietnamese father gathered military intelligence for the United States and was a POW for seven years in the same camp as John McCain.

In fact, Senator McCain played a key role in passing the Humanitarian Operation (HO Program) and the Amerasian Homecoming Act that allowed thousands of Vietnamese, like Alex's Father, to leave the communist country and come to America.

Alex and his father started their American life in Ohio where he was the only Asian in his class. He had to learn English and with the help of his 4th Grade teacher, he excelled in school.

He took care of his father, a wounded veteran and started working at the age of 13. He says when he came to America, "It was a new start."

He has worked hard and used the motto "don't spend what you don't have" to own his own business. He has managed 3 day spas and 7 salons in his career. He says what makes his business different is his commitment to his customers, his experience, and his passion.

He hopes that 2013 brings in new business and he can meet new friends. He moved to Madison with his fiancé and is happy to offer his services 7 days a week. He is always keeping up with the trends and will tell you if he thinks will work for you.

What I love about the business is the hours. They stay open until 7 and they take their time on your feet and hands.

I am the first to admit that sometimes I feel like my feet are like those of Fred Flintstone, but Alex just laughed at me and said, "when you have worked at a podiatrist office and done this as long as I have, you have seen it all."

I didn't feel so bad then. If you are worried about sanitation, they have a 100 health rating.

It's always best to call (256-772-7787) before walking in because they take their time with each person. Alex also says to bring ideas if you are a Pintrest freak like me. He says to be adventurous because it's only nail polish.

At the end of the day, you feel better about how to look and you are relaxed. It's nice to take a little me time and let someone work on you. If you to prep for the big Alabama Game or have something to do instead of the upcoming BCS game, grab a gal pal and go see Alex.

Alex is living out the American Dream, and I am happy to help contribute with my fancy red toes and my friend's sparkly nails!
