Star Student has dreams of playing in the WNBA

MADISON, AL (WAFF)- Erin Chambliss, 12, works hard in the classroom so she can play hard on the playing field.

"I play in NASA volleyball I play on the Power Team 121's and we travel around and go to like Birmingham and Montgomery and we'll be going to Orlando for nationals in June," said Erin.

She's a 6th grader at West Madison Elementary School where she's a top student. You'll always find her paying close attention in class, and while she knows education is key to one day going to college and getting a good job, there's something else that drives her to get good grades.

"It motivates me to get good grades to be able to play sports," she said.

Besides volleyball, softball is another sport she competes in.

"I love catching and just getting dirty and just having fun," she explained.

Law enforcement agencies host 'Drug take back' initiative

Law enforcement agencies had several drop off locations for unused prescription drugs.

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF)-

Law enforcement agencies took a lot of drugs from people Saturday, but it wasn't a bust. It was the 6th annual "Drug Take Back Day."

The national event allowed people to bring in their old or unwanted prescription medications so they could be disposed of. The Huntsville Police Department set up several locations for the drop offs.

Studies show prescription pill abuse is the fastest growing drug problem in the country.

"This is a great opportunity for the Partnership for a Drug Free Community organization along with local law enforcement, working together, allowing our community to come in to get rid of these unwanted, unused and outdated medications, to continue to keep the environment safe and also clean out those cupboards," said Dr. Harry Hobbs, Huntsville Police Department.

Father sets up scholarships in daughter's memory

Loryn would be 23 today and a junior at the University of Alabama.

MADISON, AL (WAFF)- When the tornadoes hit two years ago, Shannon Brown sat helplessly in north Alabama as tornadoes touched down in Tuscaloosa.

His daughter, Loryn, was there, away at college.

She was killed in the storm that leveled the city.

When he found out about that tornado, he drove all night from his home in Madison through a state of debris and darkness to try to find her.

Brown's worst fears were confirmed when he arrived at her rental home. He found Loryn and her roommates all dead.

Two years later, her picture still sits on his dashboard. The hurt doesn't get easier; he just learns different ways to deal with it... But it's still raw.

"Two years ago, I was dressing for a funeral when I felt like I should have been dressing for a wedding. It's just hard to wrap around but I don't make those decisions; the Good Man upstairs makes those decisions," he said.

Judge upholds firing of Madison Police officer

MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF)-

Court documents state a Madison County judge upheld the firing of a Madison police officer arrested for drunk driving.

Efrem Adams fought the termination, claiming the city council never saw some of the evidence in the case.

The former officer was involved in a single car wreck back in 2012. Investigators said his blood alcohol level was .25.

The judge's order states the city council did not err in their findings and the case was dismissed.
