WEATHER BLOG: Weekend flood watches

By Jeff Castle

Flood Watches are in effect across north Alabama and southern Tennessee this weekend.  2" to as much as 4" of rain may fall over the weekend as a cold front and upper level low pressure system pass through the area.  The ground is already very wet from recent rainfall and many streams and creeks are running high.  It won't take much additional rain to cause flooding issues.

Airport Authority seeks fair air fares at Huntsville Int'l Airport

Huntsville International Airport has some of the highest ticket prices in the country.

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF)- Huntsville city leaders and the Airport Authority discussed lower air fares for the area. Huntsville International Airport has some of the highest ticket prices in the country, and they want to do something about that.

Officials with the Huntsville airport have been meeting with other low cost carriers. They want to bring someone in who can make it more affordable to fly out of the airport instead of going to Nashville or Birmingham. A recent study showed that 90 percent of travelers go to those cities because the fares in Huntsville are too high.

"As you know, we are number one," said Richard Tucker, he's the Executive Director at the Huntsville International Airport.  "That's not something that you want.  It's okay to win a national championship but not in this particular category. Our average air fare in the country is $522."

Help wanted: Truck drivers needed in Alabama

The need for more drivers has increased, in part, because of new federal regulations.

MORGAN COUNTY, AL (WAFF)- The Alabama Department of Labor reported that the demand for heavy truck and tractor trailer drivers was second only to registered nurse positions that needed filled in March. There were 1,975 truck driver postings as compared to 2,009 for registered nurses.

The demand means a chance for employment for people like Isaac Posey of Athens. He is halfway through his four week training at the E.S.D Truck Driving School in Decatur.

"I used to frame houses, and since the economy failed since about '08, it's been hard to find work," Posey said. "Had a dream since I was a little boy to do this."

The school's instructor, Ron Mullard, said people like Posey are who companies are looking for because they have a clean driving record.

Man charged with stealing carpet

Madison, AL (WAFF) - Madison Police have arrested and charged a man with burglary and theft. Investigators say he was stealing rolls of carpet from a local business.

38 year old Alejandro Vidales was working as a contractor for the unnamed company last year when the items went missing. Police say the thefts happened between May and December of 2012.

Vidales is being held on a $22,500 bond.

The forecast for the weekend is becoming clearer, but unfortunately it's not looking any better for your outdoor plans.  An usually strong early May cold front will spread steadier rain across the area late Friday into Saturday.  Behind the front is an upper level low pressure area that will keep showers going through Monday.

Rain this afternoon will still be spotty at best.  WAFF 48 Pinpoint Predictor is showing sparse coverage of showers by mid-afternoon.

New Madison Crestwood Sleep Center

Crestwood's Madison Sleep Center is now open.

MADISON, AL (WAFF)- Beth
Burrow is a former sleep study patient who knows value of an individual sleep
study. Hers took place a few years ago.

"I noticed
that I was getting really tired a lot, somewhat ill, just felt like I
wasn't rested," she said.

She said the symptoms kept getting
worse.

"My
husband said I kept him up snoring, uh, lot of tossing and turning, and
then I started having some health issues," said Burrow.

Those health issues included
high blood pressure and even a small stroke.

The sleep study meant she was
watched and studied during the night.

While that patient is in bed
sleeping, in a control room on the other side of the building there is a tech
who is carefully monitoring what is going on with that patient.
