Alabama EMA sends 35 teams to affected counties

Management Agency has deployed 35 teams in DeKalb, Tuscaloosa, Calhoun, Franklin, Marion, Fayette and Madison counties that range from basic rescue of trapped individuals to the location, rescue and initial medical stabilization of victims that may be trapped in a collapsed structure.

The teams are made up of local government agencies that have agreed to assist outside their home area during a time of crisis. There are 10 heavy rescue teams, 10 medium rescue teams, five light rescue teams, one urban search and rescue team, one state mortuary team and eight law enforcement teams.

The teams, part of the Alabama Mutual Aid System, are important to the coordinated effort to ensure the response to this disaster is as effective as possible and that Alabamians impacted by the destruction in their neighborhoods are not injured further.

Everyone will be meeting Saturday, April 30th at 8am at the parking lot opposite of the Athens First United Methodist Church Beasley Center (202 West Bryan Street, Athens) to collect supplies and go out into the community to deliver those supplies and help out.

Governor Robert Bentley today activated the Governor’s Recovery Response Center in the State Capitol as a central resource to help citizens obtain the information and resources they need in the aftermath of the storm. Alabamians with questions regarding state government assistance can call the toll free number 1-866-465-2241 and speak directly with someone who can help assist them with their needs.

Alabama Department of Industrial Relations Director Tom Surtees announced today that workers who became unemployed as a direct result of recent severe storms, tornados, straight-line winds, and flooding in Cullman, DeKalb, Franklin, Jefferson, Lawrence, Marshall, Tuscaloosa and Walker counties may qualify for unemployment assistance.
People who live in or worked in these counties and become unemployed due to the severe storms, flooding, tornadoes, and straight-line winds during the period of April 15, 2011, and continuing may be eligible for the assistance under the Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) program, which was triggered when President Obama designated the area as a disaster area on April 28, 2011.
